India executed Mohammad Ajmal Kasab, the lone survivor of a fighter squad that killed people in a rampage through the financial capital Mumbai in , hanging him just days before the fourth anniversary of the attack. Kasab, a Pakistan national, was the enduring image of the bloody assault, which traumatised India and raised fears of copycat attacks on foreign cities.
The hanging took place early on Wednesday amid great secrecy, underscoring the political sensitivity of the November 26, , massacre, which still casts a pall over relations between nuclear-armed rivals Pakistan and India.
India has executed just one person in 15 years — a former security guard hanged in for the rape and murder of a year-old girl. Kasab was buried inside the prison where he was hanged, officials said. India said it would hand over the body to Pakistan if a request was made. Omar, working President of National Conference which lost power in the December, , elections, termed the Guru issue a 'sword of Damocles' hanging over him.

For Indian citizens who demanded and celebrated his hanging, Kasab was a stand-in for the whole Lashkar-e-Taiba terrorist organisation — and perhaps for Pakistan as well. If these are features of the Mumbai case that make it so singular, what do they suggest about the future of capital punishment in India? With no other capital defendant likely to measure up to the Mumbai case for the fear and fury it produced, no other case presents as compelling a case for execution.
The special horror of Mumbai may even raise the bar for acts that demand execution. The experience of the United States US federal system in the aftermath of its execution of Timothy McVeigh is instructive in this respect.
