I highly recommend you add something like Autoprefixer to your build pipeline. It will manage adding prefixes where needed, not adding them in places where they're not needed eg border-radius and let you focus on writing standards-compliant CSS. Because it is -webkit- scrollbar Note that Firefox and Edge also support -webkit-appearance , for compatibility reasons. The -moz-appearance property was used in XUL stylesheets to design custom widgets with platform-appropriate styling. It was also used in the XBL implementations of the widgets that ship with the Mozilla platform.
Note: If you wish to use this property on websites, you should test it very carefully. Although it is supported in most modern browsers, its implementation varies. In older browsers, even the keyword none does not have the same effect on all form elements across different browsers, and some do not support it at all. The differences are smaller in the newest browsers.
The following values are implemented only for one or both of the prefixed properties, but not on the standard appearance property. There was a lot written about Opera switching to WebKit back in Feb , but I haven't found anything that was posted recently via a search for "Mozilla switch to WebKit".
Here's a blog article written by the Mozilla CTO at that time. Overall, a switch to WebKit would spell the end of Mozilla. What you read may have been about work on getting a web browser on iOS, since Gecko will not be allowed due to Apple restrictions. This is the closest something from Mozilla that may ever have webkit in use instead of Gecko and will be a shell and not the Firefox.
The browser we know as Firefox has had Gecko as the rendering engine ever since it was Phoenix 0. It would basically be a new browser if they ever did use webkit.
