Yep … this article is wrong. I have heard and used both terms describing a knife. Different from prison to prison. I don't know about prison. I've never been there but in jail they sell "shankless" pens, meaning they're not solid rods. This has more quality content than my entire brain. You guys are awesome. I read a report of someone being stabbed by a motorcycle key held between the fingers in a closed fist. It was referred to as a shank.

I read another crime where a prisoner had melted a plastic razor handle or toothbrush and affixed a razor blade to the end. The weapon was used to slash a guard.

It was referred to as a shiv. This is all speculative and I have found that the difference is mostly regional.

Whereas in California, it's a shiv, and you shiv someone with it. I've never heard of anyone "shiving someone with a shank" or "shanking someone with a shiv. This is the most hilarious shiv I've read in a while.

See how I did that there? I'm an RN getting ready to start working in a prison and figured I better start learning the lingo. But this thread ended up making my week. Not sure if my question was answered, but who cares.. I will do my best to treat all the shived and shanked in honor of this memorable thread. As nouns the difference between stab and shank is that stab is an act of stabbing or thrusting with an object while shank is the lower part of the leg; shin. Straight shanks are used for keyed or keyless chucks from 10 to 13 mm. Hex shanks are used for screw guns or electric screwdrivers. In drilling holes in plywood, the same precautions can be used — splintering only occurs on the side where the drill bit comes out.
